Diagknows loves connecting things together! We get a buzz out of making our clients talk to the outside world, helping them get in securely from the outside world then share, print and collaborate with each other in the office. To do this we need networking kit, cables and wireless technology.
To let the outside world talk to your office safely we recommend DrayTek routers, they really are the bee’s knees. They are great value and offer literally everything a small business needs to connect to the Internet. So they include:
Network switches are where all those pesky network cables end up. There are many good network switches making it more difficult to choose a favourite but we generally find that the blue Netgear switches offer the right balance of feature, price and reliability – Cisco Small Business switches are worth a mention too for slightly more complex network requirements.
Wireless; now let’s be clear about something right away… Diagknows will never advise putting your server or any critical workstation on wireless. To be frank, we find wireless to be a pain! In a city centre bustling with competing wireless networks, Diagknows has tried many manufacturers and no matter what the marketing claims about eliminating crosstalk (where the myriad of wireless networks interfere with each other) we always recommend cabling where possible.
Wireless is good for hot-desk situations, meeting rooms and hard to cable areas. There is no really outstanding hardware to recommend either as the signal quality, strength and reliability depends upon the laptop’s wireless technology being happy with the wireless access point.
